About Summer Racing Teams
The WBSS summer racing team program is designed for youth sailors that want to use their sailing skills to compete. All your child needs is the interest and the appropriate skills. You do not need to own a boat.
Participation in the summer sailing program is open to any youth sailor with sufficient experience. Our staff can help you determine if your child is ready for our racing teams, but in general completion of our Learn To Race program, or experience on a high school sailing team would give sailors enough experience to participate in our summer race teams. If your child does not have these experiences, enroll them in the Learn to Race program where they can practice with the sailing teams in addition to learning the rules of racing and skills to race. By the middle of the summer they will be ready to race!
Summer Race Team members practice 4 days per week, Monday – Thursday. Attendance at practices is encouraged, but not required. Most racers sign up for practices all summer (June – August), but it is possible to register for either a first 1/2 session or a 2nd 1/2 session. Practices run about 3 hours per day in the late afternoon (see registration for exact times).
Sailors race on Friday in the youth summer sailing series organized by Twin Cities Youth Sailing (TCYS). These events are held at Twin Cities area lakes including Minnetonka, Calhoun, St Croix, and others. Participation in these events is encouraged but not required. Friday regattas start at 8AM (registration) and are usually finished by 4 PM.
Some sailors participate in regattas outside of the TCYS series, but most do not. These require travel beyond Minnesota.
$625(June 13 – July 14), $595(July 18 – August 11) or 1,095 for full summer(June 13- August 11) f Friday regattas (organized by TCYS) cost $25/Opti and $40/C420 to attend. There is an additional 1 time fee of $10 to belong to TCYS.
420 race team members rarely own their own boat and generally rent boats at the regatta for $25. Many Opti racing team members own their own boat, but you may rent a school boat on a per summer or per race basis.
